Walled City


Walls conditioned the space organization in the city since have the capacity to isolate and separate activities and uses. Chandigarh sectors are bounded by brick walls that segregate transport from the rest of urban activities giving priority to mobility and assuming that daily activities would be mostly covered within walled areas.

In the rigid urban organization, the neighborhoods (sectors) of 1200x800m are only interacting with the rest of the urban environment through the opens at the middle of the line. No activity was plan or is encouraged along the most of the long lines, neglecting communication between neighbors by enlarging the distance between them. Along the roads, people is moving: cars, trucks, buses, rickshaws, bicycles are passing and stop in the middle of nowhere. Buildings are hidden behind the walls. Tress provide the required camouflage.

Under this system, openings in the continue boundary emerge vibrant focus of activity. Meeting areas, spaces for business and interaction where formal and informal activities struggle for position. The rejection of the natural proximity, highlights the relevance of the connection areas, at the same time that increases the distances between the otherwise nearby points.
